The Slovenia Party
Slovenia is our new itinerary full of beautiful mountains, waterfalls and rivers and including one of the best restaurants in Slovenia! Flowers, mushrooms and some first class fishing opportunities available. Dates 2026: 12th - 20th May and 2nd - 10th October
FLY FISHING OPTIONS Walking is the theme of the week but there will be fly fishing opportunities for those keen. The Socha river is one of the most beautiful of Europe. It tumbles through the Julian Alps before exiting into the Adriatic in Italy. This beautiful emerald, jade, turquoise river is teeming with fish: grayling, marbled trout and of course rainbow trout. There will be fly fishing options this week. Fly fishing will be an extra cost and involve the help of a local ghillie. It is very classy fishing they offer in Slovenia so we will be able to offer up to three afternoons on different rivers. For more fishing we need to discuss!
The waterfalls cascading down the mountain walls are numerous. They are less easy to get under than in Georgia but they are wonderful to listen to and wonder at.
Here is an attempt to give you the extraordinary colour of the beautiful Soca river. Definitely some wild swimming opportunities for the brave!
We visit St John the Baptist church at the beginning of the week. Richly saturated in brightly coloured C16th frescoes it is a fascinating church to visit before we walk along Bohinj lake.
Skocjan caves remind me of Doug McClure wandering into the core of the Earth on the silver screen years ago. We cross this little bridge well under the crust and watch the roaring river below cascade through the cavern. In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure dome decree: Where Alph the sacred river ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to the sunless sea ... And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething, As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing, A mighty fountain momently was forced: Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail
The beauty of the Julian Alps was also the scene of horrors of the First World War. A part of the war we know little about but we shall discuss this as it is yet another example of the horrors of mankind. Here is the mighty facade of the mountain Krn.
Mushrooms in early October are prevalent. Here we have some saffron milk caps. I have also found blewits and hedgehog fungi. I will have my skillet for those that trust me!
Not many people know that the extraordinary Lipizanner horses, that one knows of as Spanish or belonging to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, originate from Slovenia. The stud at Lipica has around two hundred or more Lipizanner horses and you will hear of the extraordinary story of how they were saved from almost certain death in the Second World War. Again ... when will we stop?
It is a sunny feeling to think we end with a full day taking it easy in the pretty port of Piran. It really is very small here and the Hotel Piran sits right on the sea so plenty of time to swim or just wander through the little streets.
James hosts this trip. Hotels, restaurants and visits have been carefully selected to reveal the character and colour of Slovenia. Furthermore all meals and wines are included. Also lunch will be a mix of picnics and restaurants. Dinners will generally be where we are staying but there will be some forays to excellent restaurants nearby.

Situated overlooking the Lake Of Bohinj and mountains this chalet style hotel has simple bedrooms but this is a charming and friendly run hotel. All bedrooms have bathrooms en suite.
Gostisce Gacnk**
One of my favourite places to stay in. There is so much character here and genuine down to earth quality. It is a simple roadside inn built like a mountain chalet with 9 bedrooms. There is a restaurant and darts board!

This is a charming boutique four star hotel situated on the outskirts of Bovec surrounded by mountains . The rooms are all beautifully appointed and all have bathrooms en suite.
Hotel Piran ****
This lovely four star hotel is situated on the seashore. Lovely swimming opportunities here Spectaculer views with a roof terrace. We will hope for all rooms to have balconies and sea views.
Vander Urbani Hotel ****
This boutique four star hotel is small and situated in the heart of the old part of Ljubljana near the river. It is the ideal place to end ones travels in Slovenia. All rooms have bathrooms en suite.
Grade Of Walking
The walking is on solid ground. Some of the paths are narrow and a little rocky and there will be climbs and ascents but nothing too difficult. We always suggest walking the morning walk. For those feeling tired in the afternoon there is always a vehicle to take you back to the hotel. And here in Slovenia there will be fly fishing opportunities too for those interested which will involve a local gilley but of course then you cannot walk that afternoon! Our hotels have been carefully chosen (see ACCOMMODATION) so they are all excellent places for relaxing, reading and just taking it easy if you wish to take an afternoon off. The fact that we do not officially offer time in the villages that we stay in, as we always have walks on offer, means that often people will take an afternoon off to enjoy village life.FOOD & WINE
Eating at Hisa Franko for me has been the best eating experience I have ever had. It is a close run call between other styles of restaurant but for a Michelin star type it is the best! Three stars were gained here in 2023. It is an absolute must to experience this. We shall also be eating in some other wonderful places that are different in style carefully chosen for the cuisine. One of my favourite restaurants is Neptun in Piran ... I just hope they are still open.
Wine in Slovenia is fascinating. Lots of lovely wine being made here with unusual grape varietals. Refosk for red and Rebula for white are the most popular but other varietals like Zelen and Pinela from the Vipava Valley where we visit are delicious. Also we shall taste Furmint (Sipon) and others. As ever we will be making a point of this through the itinerary!
