The Georgia Tusheti Party

This ten day trip takes you into one of the remotest regions of Georgia. The hills are rugged. The streams are fast flowing. The landscape is dramatic. There are no shops! You are in the 'remote'. Not for the faint-hearted but sensational! Dates 2026: 27th June - 5th July

We start the itinerary in the beautiful city of Tbilisi. Although sacked approximately forty times in a thousand years this is still a fabulously lovely city. The cultural heart of Georgia. We will spend a night at either end of your stay here. It may be a good idea to come out a day or two earlier just to appreciate what Tbilisi has to offer.

Alaverdi Monastery, Georgia

On our way into Tusheti we shall visit some cultural icons. This is Alaverdi Monastery founded in the sixth century. It has an immensity to the inside which is awe-inspiring. What we see today is mostly eleventh century.

Wine will play an important role in the itinerary. This is a culture that dates back some eight thousand years. There are around five hundred grape varieties in Georgia that we have not heard of in Europe. Wine is made in terracotta amphorae (qvevri) which are buried for temperature control. We will be working on lots of different wines and showing you how this method works.

The towers in Tusheti are defence towers like in Svaneti but here they have characteristic bee hive tops. Audrey our guide will be talking to us also about the paganism that is still practised in the mountains here. It is a fascinating culture.

Tusheti, Georgia

Always a little bit of river crossing as we work our way up and down. There is up and down every day so you will need a certain amount of fitness for this trip as well as a certain amount of mental

The weather can turn quite quickly so it is important that you come equipped for all weathers. There will be a good packing list to help you!

Picnics are how we have lunch up the mountain. They are light and we all tuck in and get on with it! They are absolutely delicious and the settings are wonderful.

James hosts this trip with his friend guide, Audrey. There is a driver too with the four wheel drive vehicle. Hotels, restaurants and visits have been carefully selected to reveal the character and colour of Tusheti. All meals and drinks are included and lunch will be picnics all the way.

Accommodation

The accommodation will be a mix of three star hotel and guesthouses.  In the guesthouses in the mountains there will be repeated times when bathroom facilities are shared.  All hotels will have bathrooms en suite.

Grade Of Walking

The Caucasus mountains in Tusheti give us six days of very much up and down. We go at our own pace and stop at regular intervals and we are always looking at things. This is not a striding out trek. This is walking to enjoy ones surroundings and be aware of what we can see. The flora and fauna of the Caucasus are fascinating as you will see!

FOOD & WINE

Georgian food is a hidden gastronomic culture. There is much use of fenugreek and coriander seed and chili and other mixes like akira that you will not have heard of. Saffron in Georgia is actually ground Marigold flower. In Tbilisi we make the most of showing you some fabulous Georgian food. In the mountains however we are limited with picnics but the cooking in the guesthouses is fabulous and full of character.

Everyday we have wines that have been carefully selected for the trip. This is one of my favourites from the well known wine maker Archil Guniava.
