The Truffle Hop
Spend the days seeking out the pungent and highly sought after black truffle. There are few things quite so decadent as our seven course truffle brunch. The ultimate in romantic gestures. Flowers, champagne ... !! Dates: 9th - 13th February, 16th - 20th February
Winter is the time for hunting out the elusive black truffle. With our choice of two February weekends it could however be the ultimate romantic Valentine getaway. For in our humble opinion nothing quite says love as much as a very expensive black truffle.
It is the Lot area of France that some of the biggest and best black truffles are to be found and many truffle hunters still follow the centuries old tradition of using a pig to sniff them out.
Over the weekend you will experience every stage in the truffle trade by hunting them with a pig, visiting the truffle market at Lalbenque where the trade is taken very seriously and then following them to the plate via a cookery demonstration and an opportunity to truffle your own foie gras. The highlight of the weekend is an unforgettable seven course truffle brunch prepared by chef Bernard Philippe who will also conjure up many other truffle delights.
James hosts this trip. Hotels, restaurants and visits have been carefully selected to reveal the character and colour of the Lot-Quercy. All meals and truffles are included.
HOSTELLERIE LE VERT
This elegant manoir in the heart of the Quercy landscape is owned and run by locally revered chef, Bernard Philippe and his delightful wife, Eva. There are just 6 comfortable en suite bedrooms and we would normally occupy the whole house. The dining tables are arranged around the impressive fireplace with its open fire or on the terrace to enjoy the balmy evenings serenaded by nightingales. Heated pool. Wi-fi. 4 nights.
Grade Of WalkingThere is very little walking really in The Truffle Hop. The paths are good and solid and sometimes we will walk on tarmac lanes but the walking is more just to keep you in trim for the big gastronomic experience you will be going through !
We always suggest walking the morning walk. For those feeling tired in the afternoon there is always a vehicle to take you back to the hotel. Our hotels have been carefully chosen (see ACCOMMODATION) so they are all excellent places for relaxing, reading and just taking it easy. The fact that we do not officially offer time in the villages that we stay in as we always have walks on offer means that often people will take an afternoon off to enjoy village life.
FOOD & WINE
During these 5 days of almost decadent gastronomy you will be delighted with a light 7 course, truffled brunch preceding our visit to the truffle market. Our talented chef, Bernard, will regale you at the table with crepes suzette and you will make your very own truffled foie gras at James and Diana’s house to take home with you. And also not to forget Bernard's truffle dinner on the Sunday night.
After a great selection of southwest wines such as Jurançon, Madiran, Gaillac, Marcilhac and Cahors we will finish with one of the great Malbecs of the world: Château Pineraie’s ‘L’Authentique’. One of our sweet whites was described by Clive Coates as being like a blend of 75% Yquem and 25% Climens; this is Château Richard’s ’Coup de Cœur’.
